“Nothing can stand against you except yourself”
Muaythai has been a part of Thai history and heritage for hundreds of years as with most traditions from ancient times.
Muaythai was the primary and most effective method of self defense used by Thai warriors in the battlefields of conflicts
and wars that occurred countless times throughout the history of the nation now known as Thailand.
Prachao Sua - the Tiger King loved Muay Thai so much that he often fought incognito in village contests, beating the local champions. During the reign of the Tiger King the nation was at peace. The King, to keep the army busy, ordered it to train in Muay Thai. The interest in the sport was already high but now it took off yet again. Muay thai became the favorite sport and pastime of the people, the army, and the King. Historical sources show that people from all walks of life flocked to training camps. Rich, poor, young and old all wanted some of the action.
"Every civilian man or woman, who ever walk a deserted road at midnight, or goes in fear of his life in the dark places of a city, should acquaint himself with these methods. Once mastered, they will instill
the courage and self-reliance that come with the sure knowledge that you are the master of anydangerous situation
with which you may have to cope."
"They owe something to the famous Japanese judo (jiu-jutsu), and something else to Chinese boxing. But largely, they were developed from my own experience and observation of how most effectively to deal with the ruffians, thugs, bandits, and bullies of one of toughest waterfront areas in the world."
(William E. Fairbairn, Get tough 1942)
Harold Stairn, a highly decorated WWII Special Operations Veteran with the British Army,
was one of the few original Certified Unarmed Combat Instructors that continued to teach following WWII. ¨ Stairn, a Master of Judo and Ju Jutsu, a Boxer, a Wrestler and Master Fencer, reserved instruction in "DEFENDO" for a select few military personel. One of which was a young soldier named Bill Wolfe who was a Judo and Ju Jutsu student of Stairn's. Stairn, recognizing Wolfe's natural ability and tough as nails character, proceeded to pass on the skills that had allowed him to complete his missions in the worst of circumstances. .
